50% Increase in SafeRide Surcharge Funding!
By an 84-13 vote, legislators passed a bill to increase SafeRide funding by increasing the SafeRide surcharge 50% as they concluded the 2020 legislative session in the early morning hours on Friday. The increase in the surcharge comes from OWI convictions and does not use any state tax dollars. AB 869 was authored by Representative Rob Swearingen and contains a number of provisions including DNC extended bar hours. The bill now heads to the Senate which is expected to take it up in March.
The bill does the following:
· Increase the SafeRide surcharge $25 per OWI conviction. Will generate $300,000 additional revenue to SafeRide Program.
· Road America state alcohol permit
· DNC closing hours to 4 am July 13-16 in Southeast Wisconsin
· State Fair park alcohol vendor changes
This is a tremendous victory for our SafeRide Program and reflects the continued growth and success of the program. Alcohol related fatalities have dropped over 50% in Wisconsin since 2005. The additional revenue will help to expand the Program statewide and increase use at festivals from Summerfest to FlambeauRama!!
A big thank you to Representatives Rob Swearingen, Rob Summerfield, Dan Knodl, Rob Brooks, James Edming and Speaker Robin Vos for helping to pass our amendment. The bill now heads to the Senate which is expected to be on the floor one day in March before they adjourn for the session.
